In 2000, summer camps across America watched their animated age-inappropriate sci-fi comedy Creature from the Black Lagoon. In 1953, Universal Pictures released a movie to the North American market based on a story by horror master Edgar Allan Poe. The original creature in that film is a half human/half amphibian man who looks like an humanoid frog. Although it was well received by audiences and critics alike, it did not perform well at the box office. The film had a production budget of $90 million USD and grossed $60 million domestically and $10 million internationally for a total of $70 million worldwide. The 2015 film, made by Universal Studios and written and directed by Andrew Fogel, was based on the earlier film and did not use the remake's characters from the 1950s. It starred Lucas Till, Thomas Jane, Yvonne Strahovski, Deedee Magno Hall and Joe Pingue in an updated version of the story set in present day. In addition to creature makeup effects done by Greg Nicotero, a portion of the film was shot in a Louisiana bayou environment. This is also a Creature from the Black Lagoon reboot with completely new characters without Howard Hawks' involvement. The 2016 film, remade by Sean S. Cunningham and directed by Greg McLean, was adapted from the original 1954 film with a mixture of elements from the original and subsequent sequels. It features a prequel story that focuses on a young girl's abduction by an undersea creature as well as the creature itself at times during its history. It features the characters of Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Perlman and Adrien Brody as well as Liev Schreiber and is considered to be the fourth installment in the franchise.
